Putting Community First.
Hi! My name is Brei Johnson and I’m running for the vacant seat available on Johnston City Council.
MEET BREI JOHNSON
For the past two years I have volunteered at our church as a leader to our Senior High student ministry. It has been a huge treat for to me to engage with our youth in that capacity as it has a way of keeping me young-at-heart!
During the last three years I have fostered relationships with state legislators at the Iowa State Capitol building talking about issues that are important to me and my family. In light of events during 2020 and now in 2021, I’m eager to provide my experience and qualifications to my local community in a broader capacity.
In my free-time I attempt to garden (somethings grow, others do not)! I enjoy exploring community trails with
our girls and our dog Jax and listening to audiobooks.
It would be an honor to apply my talents towards maintaining Johnston's excellence as a place to live
and raise a family.
Together with my husband, JJ, we have lived in Johnston for eight years with our three girls. We have truly fallen in love with this community!
Prior to becoming a stay-at-home mom three years ago, I worked for Iowa Workforce Development for seven years as a marketing and communication specialist. During my time there, I helped promote programs and services such as Future Ready Iowa, Home Base Iowa, IowaWORKS, and many more!
The last three years I have been fortunate to be able to homeschool our girls. We are part of an amazing co-op community where I’ve had the privilege to tutor other children in a classroom setting one day a week.
Why Am I Running?
Growing up in Cresco, Iowa I witnessed the best possible example of being a community servant as demonstrated by my father. As a small business owner he strived for excellence and unity in the community, often doing thankless tasks because they were simply the
right things to do. With such an amazing example as my focus, I believe I have not only
the professional experience, but also the heart to serve this beautiful community my
family calls home.
What can I do for Johnston?
A thriving community should meet the diverse needs of its members. It would be my pleasure to apply the experience gained through involvement from my previous employment, my volunteer work with my church, non-profit and community groups and as the wife of a police officer to identify unique solutions for the following:
Growing the community through family centered resources and activities
Constructive ways to balance both infrastructure growth and nature preservation
Pursue ways to support existing local businesses and attract new businesses
Campaign Key Points:
As a single income household I am intimately familiar with the importance of smart spending. I desire to see Johnston continue to grow and thrive as a community but we also need to use funds wisely. I will focus on community improvements that benefit all residents.
PUBLIC SAFETY EMPHASIS
According to a recent survey the quality of Johnston's public safety services (including fire and police protection and emergency medical services) rank high among residents at 30-38% above the national average. As the wife of a police officer, I am dedicated to supporting these essential community services.
SMART DEVELOPMENT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES AND HOUSING
One of the main concerns I hear while door knocking is related to development. We must have housing to support business and we must have business to attract residents. We must also ensure Johnston residents feel safe and are contributing to their neighborhoods. City leadership must roll up their sleeves and focus on root issues, not merely address symptoms.
